Housed in an expansive storefront across the street from the elegant Hawaii Theatre Center in Chinatown, The Arts at Mark’s Garage has been a bastion of eclecticism ever since its grand opening in July 2001, hosting everything from a boisterous Irish comedy troupe and a dramatic examination of the Polynesian immigrant experience to punk-rock bands and free-form gatherings of poets.

Financed by a dozen separate artistic organizations and divided into spaces for performance and visual art, the space itself is a unique artistic statement—the upwardly swooping ceiling, for example, which looks like something straight out of the Guggenheim, is actually the underside of a car ramp.
