Editorial Mission

As the island lifestyle magazine of Hawaii‘s premier airline, Hana Hou! strives to provide fresh, insightful views of the people, places and cultures that make our island home so special. Whether you‘re a resident or a visitor, we hope to offer exciting new perspectives through our commitment to outstanding writing, photography and graphic design. We consider it a privilege to be able to present the work of some of Hawaii's finest writers and artists.

In addition to intriguing features, interviews, travelogues and profiles, our writers cover the best in contemporary dining, shopping, entertainment and more. Our "Native Intelligence" and "Best of the Islands" sections bring to light undiscovered gems of local culture and offer inside tips on where to go and what to do in the Islands. And, for your puzzlement, we offer our exclusive, Hawaii-themed Hana Hou! Crossword.

Hana Hou! is published every other month by Pacific Travelogue Inc. of Honolulu. Complimentary copies are provided in the seat pockets of all Hawaiian Airlines flights, and you are most welcome to keep your copy when you fly. In addition, Hana Hou! is available at newsstands throughout the state of Hawaii, and by subscription.

For businesses with markets in Hawaii or any of Hawaiian Airlines' other destinations, Hana Hou! offers an exceptional advertising environment that reaches a diverse audience of over a million Hawaiian passengers and other readers with each bimonthly issue. Hana Hou! Writers' Guidelines

Please be aware that Hana Hou! only rarely accepts unsolicited submissions. Writers who do wish to submit should send either:

1) A completed copy of your manuscript. (We accept no responsibility for return of your document, so please make sure to keep a copy.)

or:

2) A one-page query letter briefly "pitching" your story concept and outlining your writing experience.  If you submit a query letter, you must also include samples of previously published writing (maximum of three pieces).

Queries may be addressed to:

Editor
Hana Hou! Magazine
1144 10th Avenue, Suite 401
Honolulu, HI 96816
808.733.3340 fax

No phone or e-mail inquiries, please.

In general, we are looking for creative nonfiction that takes a fresh approach to aspects of travel, culture, people and life in general in Hawaii, and occasionally in one of the other destinations served by Hawaiian Airlines.  We stress an "insider's" point of view, so a background of extended residency in the place you're writing about is preferred.

With a new writer, we generally want to start with a short piece for our front-of-the-book "Native Intelligence" section (250 words or less), so it is best to submit proposals that would be appropriate for that length.  If we are interested in your proposal, we will ask you to submit your first article on "spec" terms, meaning that we reserve the right to decline the piece for publication without payment.  If we do accept your piece for publication, rates paid will be as follows:

Native Intelligence: $175

Features and departments: 40 cents per word.

Best of the Islands: $50

Thank you for your interest in Hana Hou!
